When reading a book by Dr. Ronald Walter entitled “Freedom is not Enough" it inspired me to read more about voting and how important voting is. I started doing research on poll taxes and registering to vote in the south. I read when African Americans tried to vote they would be asked crazy question such as “How many bubbles are in a bar of soap? How many jellybeans in a jar?" So, I decide to see if I could get a few people to confirm this.
I asked friends to speak with there parents and grandparents about their experience in trying vote. I received numerous responses such as Ms. Earnestine Bradley from Ocoee, Florida said 3 days before election day there would be a cross burning then the day before there would be noose and along with signs that says” It’s best you not be hanging around here to vote”. Other were asked How many seed are in a watermelon?
Ms. Annie Mae Parker of Edgefield South Carolina said she was asked “How many black eye peas come in a bag?"
